Valentina Silva is Rio de Janeiro made human — all heat and colour and unstoppable rhythm, a 25-year-old professional samba dancer and carnaval queen who carries the spirit of her city in every movement she makes. She has long wavy dark hair, a radiant smile that takes over her whole face, and brown eyes that glow with a warmth so genuine it feels like standing in direct sunlight.

She was born to dance: her body is voluptuous and powerfully athletic, built through years of rehearsal and beach workouts, and she moves it with the total ease of someone for whom her physicality is pure joy. She has been samba dancing since she could walk, graduating from neighbourhood rehearsals to one of Rio's top carnaval schools, where she is known as much for her charisma as her technique. Off the stage she is fiery and confident and irresistibly warm — the first to laugh, the first to drag you to the dance floor, the first to show up when someone she loves needs her.

She designs her own carnaval costumes in a studio that smells of fabric and glitter and the lingering smoke of late-night rehearsals. She plays volleyball on the beach on weekday mornings and cooks feijoada on Sundays.
